The Inevitability of Food Shortages: Be Prepared

The Inevitability of Food Shortages- Be Prepared - food shortage

Food shortages in the “land of the free and the home of the brave” sounds impossible; especially with every mainstream media outlet blasting the obesity epidemic day after day. Witness Venezuela. The Venezuelan government enacted price controls on certain dietary staples in 2014 in order to combat inflation. In addition to price controls, the Venezuelan government also imposed currency restrictions on food importers. Food importers were limited to which currencies they were legally able to accept for their food purchases. This has resulted in disaster for the Venezuelan people since food importers struggle to obtain acceptable currency and at the same time find willing food suppliers who accept that currency. There is a massive food shortage in Venezuela. There is such a dire food shortage there at the moment that trucks transporting food have taken to traveling with armed guards. There is major civil unrest due a shortage of food. In May of 2016 Venezuelans have begun to storm the supermarkets just to obtain the most basic food supplies such as oil and flour. A 4-year-old girl was killed in a street fight over food. Money is basically worthless when you cannot exchange that money for life-sustaining food. When human life becomes expendable in an effort to obtain food, civilization has basically crumbled.

A food shortage like the one in Venezuela can happen anywhere at any time. Government policies, currency devaluations, and crop failures can come together in a perfect storm of food disaster. You, as an individual, are in no way capable of controlling, much less influencing government policies and natural disasters. When civilization crumbles, you do not want to be long on cash and reliant on a supermarket that may or may not have food available for purchase. You certainly don’t need to be involved in a street fight over food, putting your life in imminent danger.
