Look outside. It probably looks pretty peaceful right now, but by 2020, there could be a completely different picture playing outside of your window. Food shortage riots and general unrest could be a very real possibility in the near future according to a computer model made by government contractor CNA Corporation, a non-profit research organization that runs the Center for Naval Analyses and the Institute for Public Research.
Their new model, released to government officials and policy makers from the United States, European Union, Brazil, China, Africa and India in November went unreported until June 26, and even now fails to get the attention that it deserves.
The model takes place in the year 2020 where extreme weather and political conflict have disrupted the production of food in the grain belts of many nations. This, in turn, has created wide-spread food shortages and civil unrest from not only uncertain food security, but prices that saw a 365 percent increase.
The model started off normal with things we have now come to expect. First it was oil prices rebounding to the high standard we had once come to accept, namely $75 per barrel. This rose food prices slightly through increased transportation fees. However, the global food prices continued to climb as weather-related events disrupted agricultural production in major food-producing countries like South Asia, Australia, and North America.
Yet, this all only leads to modest price increases. By 2023, things start to get serious. After severe droughts in China, India, Russia, and Ukraine, as well as oil prices rising to $100 per barrel, food prices hit a record high, reaching a 395 percent increase in 2024 after droughts began to subside elsewhere, but reached the European Union.
Thankfully, by 2027, the weather events begin to subside and the high food prices stimulate food production around the world. Without weather disruption, food stocks begin to increase and then prices gradually come down again.
Unfortunately, each of the representatives that were shown this report as well as the analysts all agree that there is no way to avoid this future food crisis.
So what do we do?
Ultimately, a solution to this problem lies in new and innovative cooperation between governments, businesses, and civil society. This is something that, in the world as it is now, is never going to happen. While the visual data of a future crisis can be a motivator to some, a lack of trust means that we will continue to neglect the sharing of agricultural data that could keep our country stable.
If our government can’t help us, it is up to us to make sure our family is prepared to endure the oncoming food shortage. But the question is, how do you prepare for something like this? Multiple years of questionable food security is no small task to prepare for, especially when most canned food doesn’t have a shelf life of more than two years. You need to not only have your own food sources, but you also need to have a food source that can supplement what you cannot produce.
Be ready for any disaster, threat or civil unrest. You need to ask yourself if you are prepared for when the inevitable strikes? Do you have enough food stores for your family? Is your water supply safe? Do you have a habitable safe haven when the tides turn? Any Disaster can outfit you with every bit of off the grid material and products you could ever need.
